Tecno Mobile Set To Launch The Phantom 8 In Dubai Come 22nd Of October

The yet to be launched Phantom 8 can probably wear the crown as one of the most talked about smartphones of 2017, possibly even surpassing the Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 in Nigeria with the amount of gossip, rumours, leaks, and general feverish anticipation around the smartphone.

Bearing the theme “Capture Your Legend”, the Phantom 8 is expected to hold its own as the best TECNO Phantom yet -surpassing the sales feat recorded by the Phantom 6 and 6 plus.

PHANTOM 8 LAUNCH: WHERE & WHEN?

For every device launched, TECNO loves to make a bold statement. It’s quite obvious the Phantom 8 launch event will match the standard set by the Phantom 6 and even surpass it. And since they have done a launch at the tallest building in the world, where will it be this time? Could it be the biggest arena? However, from the information available on TECNO’s official Facebook page, we already know the launch will take place in Dubai on October 22, 2017.

Tecno-Phantom 8

It’s interesting to see how TECNO Mobile is stepping up to the big stage, having made giant strides with the global launch of the Phantom 6 and 6 Plus in 2016, which also doubled as its 10 Years anniversary.

The Perception of TECNO has also greatly improved in the last few years, completely moving away from the low-level brand image it used to be associated only a while back. This can be clearly attributed to the brand’s bullish approach and continuous quest in reinventing itself, delivering products that level up with the biggest mobile brands, while standing the test of time. Well done TECNO Mobile

While we are yet to get the official specs of the device as at the time of writing this post, in just few hours from now, the new Phantom will be unveiled. Save the date 22nd October, 2017.

TECNO Phantom 8 Unboxing: My First 24hours with my new TECNO Phantom 8

$

0

The new TECNO Phantom 8 was launched some weeks ago and a lot of things have been said about the device. After the launch of the Phantom 6&6 Plus, I was among the set of people looking forward to the next Phantom because the Phantom 6 for me, remains the best smartphone to grace the market last season.

So, the question was “what else would TECNO do that would wow their fans? Well, I guess they just answered the question with this “super” new Phantom 8.

OK, without wasting much time let’s dig into this device.

Tecno Phantom 8

The amazing device comes in a stylish black box with the inscription of the number 8 written with a juicy, glossy gold paint at the front while the word “Phantom 8” is engraved at the side of the box.

And yea, I finally opened the box. Believe me when I tell you, this is one of the most attractive android smartphones from TECNO.

A beautiful device like this deserves a glass of wine, don’t you think?

The device comes in a fashionable package, TECNO deserves a thumbs up for this, they sure know how to package.

I must keep this box away from my wife, because if she sets her eyes on it, she wouldn’t have a need to get a new jewellery box <<chuckling>>. The Phantom 8 is so well packaged, that you smell “classy” by just opening the box.

The first thing you see when you open the box is the phone itself as a black foil paper (with details of some Phantom 8 spec written on it) covering the screen.

Not trying to be too dramatic, but the new TECNO Super 8 (that’s how I like to call it) is a feast for the eyes and what makes it so special is this: its tall, narrow shape that fits snugly in the palm and curved sides that scream “PREMIUM.”

I just love the lux finishing at the back- whew! this smartphone is a beauty.

One thing I like about the Phantom 8’s design is the positioning of the back camera- although this isn’t new from TECNO, but the smooth positioning of the back camera, makes it amazing and different. Although, the phone’s glossy and glass finishing are still a bit too slippery for total comfort but the size and edges help you get a better grip on the handset.

And yes inside the box is a protective cover the prevent this.

Will there be a Plus version? Well, that’s for TECNO to decide but with what I am seeing already, I don’t think there is a need because this got me all in love.

Back to the Unboxing

I take the foil off and start up the phone, but while we wait, let’s look at what is inside the box…

When you open the black sophisticated box, there is plenty to be had, including a TECNO adaptive fast charger, a pair of earphones, a free pouch, SIM ejector tool, user manuals

Let me give you some refreshing detail about the specs of the new TECNO Phantom 8:

  • 5.7-inch FHD with 2.5D glass display
  • 6GB of RAM
  • 64GB of internal storage (expandable by up to 128 GB via microSD)
  • 12MP + 13MP cameras with TRI-TONE Flash.
  • 20MP smart selfie camera with dual LED flash
  • 3,500 mAh battery
  • Fingerprint scanner

I would concentrate on the features of the device in my next article. For now, lets just savour the beauty of this technology. Below are some of the TECNO Phantom 8 Unboxing Pictures.

The ONLY Infinix Hot 5 Review You’ll Ever Need to Read

$
0
0

Infinix is the brand that is well loved among young folks – it is the way the brand is being communicated and perceived. Out of every 10-university student you’ll run into 7 of them are using Infinix. The remaining 3 are on iPhone, TECNO, Samsung, Nokia and the other brands.

Infinix Hot 5

The Infinix Hot 5 is called the Mobile Cinema. It sports a 5.5 HD screen and it is a 2 GB RAM device. As a rule of thumb, anything below 2 GB of RAM on an Android device is a total entry level device that will struggle to do multitasking–social media, emails, photography, gaming and movies without lagging behind. Kudos to Infinix for delivering a 2 GB RAM Hot 5.

First, let’s quickly run through the specs that make the phone stand out:

Fingerprint Scanner — for extra layer of security, 16 GB + 2 GB of RAM, a 4000 mAh battery (that’s enough power to last you more than a day on full charge), 8 MP rear camera and 5 MP front camera (I know you are already asking how good is the front and back camera. More on that later), and it runs Android 7.0 covered with Infinix XOS UI–customised.

What do we have in the box?

The Infinix Hot 5, a charger, micro USB cable that works with the charger, earphones, and a style ring that will beautify your device and can act as a stand for the device when watching movies.

Let’s forget about rhetoric and dive straight in.

First look at the Hot 5
On opening the phone, the XOS has a pretty UI that I love. The icons are not huge, the neat UI beats that of TECNO’s HiOS hands down. Infinix did not just build monstrous battery, but took care to ensure it is laced with a pretty user interface.

I know people who swear by the physical screen function keys. That is missing here. You only have on screen function keys. The advantage of the onscreen functional keys is that you won’t accidentally hit on the function keys when watching movies or playing games while using the phone in landscape mode.

The volume rocker and the power key is on the same side, while the left-hand side of the phone has nothing. However, the 3.5mm audio jack is at the awkward position where music lovers won’t find it the easiest–the base of the phone is the best place to have it.

A device for movie lovers
I downloaded a video and cranked the volume all the way up and it delivered. Loud enough when using the loudspeaker during a movie and crispy clear as well. One question I know you might have is, how clear will the screen be when you are watching movie outdoor when the sun is shining? Very clear and sharp.

I will recommend you download VLC, the number one movie app on Android phone (by me).

How does the phone camera stack up?
The two things people value the most in a phone is the battery and the camera. The Hot 5 delivers with its 4000 mAh battery. How about the camera?

Students will normally use the camera of their phone to capture note or take a picture of what is written on the board. The Hot 5 delivers on all these fronts. Close up images comes out very sharp and images take from afar do not lose details when zoomed. However, you will not get optical image stabilization (OIS) here. You need to ensure your hands are very stable when shooting images to prevent them from being blurry.

Here are examples of some images captured with the Hot 5.

[Close-up image of the smoothie and images from the roof of the building]

Infinix Hot 5

One app I will recommend you download is Office Lens and it is FREE. With it, you can push the boundaries of the camera as a scanning device.

Battery Capacity and Network
The battery of the Hot 5 will carry you for a whole day with a single charge and you will have some juice left. This is possible on moderate use. But if you are watching movie and using social media 8/10 hours in a day, don’t expect this to happen. You are however assured of a smooth experience with the battery and no need for panic charging of phone or carry your charger everywhere you go. Ensure you are using the charger that comes with the box to enjoy the fast charge feature and improve the battery life of your phone.

You can get up to 42Mbps speed on the Hot 5. But it is only supports up to 3G. You will not get LTE or 4G here. But not to worry, you can connect to 4G via Wi-Fi and enjoy optimal speed.

Extra Layer of Security; Finger print Scanner
No two people have the same fingerprint. You can secure your phone with the fingerprint to improve the security of your phone. The fingerprint scanner is comfortably placed and the back of the phone and reachable with ease even if your hands are as small as mine.

Price
At 37,500 NGN, the Infinix Hot 5 is a good buy any day. But if what you are looking for is a phone that is pretty, this might not be your choice. The phone is however not ugly, and it delivers as a good camera, retains a lot of power through the day and an awesome entertainment device. I recommend you buy the phone.

#AFRIFF2017 Movie Review: Felicite

$
0
0

There are two Alain Gomises that show up in Felicite, the fourth feature length by the French-Senegalese auteur.

Scratch that. On second thought, Felicite is actually two separate films helmed by one person. Mr Gomis’ hand held, documentary, gritty-with-a-touch-of-realism camera work is present throughout the film’s extended running time. The first part has a linear enough narrative and plays out with some conviction. The titlular character, Felicite is a single mother struggling to get by in the tough streets of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Felicite (Vero Tshanda Beya Mputu) ekes out a living as a bar singer, performing with a band, the Kasai All-stars at night and taking care of mundane domestic duties, like attempting to light up her second hand refrigerator during the day. She fends off advances from the neighborhood handyman, Tabu (Papi Mpaka) who spends his nights, drunk and in love, emboldened by the raw power of Felicite’s music.

The scenes of Felicite performing are some of the film’s strongest and Beya Mputu is a strong, almost visceral presence as she evokes as many primal emotions dancing and swinging her waist, as she does while passive and at rest. Gomis is on to something with her casting and she gives generously as much as her director demands of her.

Felicite receives news that her son has been involved in a motorbike accident and the first half of the film calls to mind the Dardenne brothers’ Marion Cotillard vehicle, Two Days, One Night. In one instructive scene that reflects the strength and circumstances of countless African women, hours after receiving this tragic news, Felicite goes to work, singing and dancing like her life depends on it.

Beyond speaking to the maxim that the show must goes on, this singular act demonstrates the fierce resolve that women on the continent must live through. Their personal lives may be in shambles, relationships a mess, but they suck it all up, hold it in and get the job done. Because that is what they have to do.

In any case, Gomis isn’t particularly interested in this predicament even though for a while, he makes viewers accompany Felicite as she struggles to raise the money that will help her son get better. She stands up to a debtor, soaks in insults from her mother and endures the humiliation of going back to the boy’s father to ask for help. In the face of tragedy, Felicite is consumed with a righteous resolve and her pride shines through a near-violent and degrading experience with a local mob boss.

In the hands of a less capable actress, Felicite would have dissolved into a blubbering pool at this point, playing on emotions and tugging on heartstrings. But Ms Beya Mputu’s steely gaze and passive aggressive control makes it quite clear that her Felicite isn’t here for your pity. She knows what is at stake, recognizes the hand that life has dealt her, and immediately goes about seeking ways to balance the order.

Another director would (wisely) have followed this story till its logical conclusion- she saves the day, or comes in seconds too late. But Gomis is preoccupied with other matters that range from the realistic to the whimsical. He wraps up this story arc quickly. Felicite brings her son home and then the second part of the films, shot in a loose documentary style follows the heroine as she merely exists, dealing with her own feelings. She sinks into depression, loses her voice for a spell and considers the imperfect affections of Tabu. She also disappears into the woods at night to meditate by herself with only water bodies as companion, and there are segments devoted to the Kinshasa Symphonic Orchestra performing somber classic tunes. At this point nothing seems to make narrative sense and audiences are urged to task themselves mentally to at least keep up with Gomis.

His direction is unhurried and the pacing of the film is quite laborious. Gomis proves to be self-indulgent as his film proceeds to run around in circles, arriving nowhere and lacking any cohesion, diluting what could have been a solid outing. Felicite may win all the awards, but good luck finding anyone that actually warms up to the film.

#AFRIFF2017 Movie Review: Keteke

$

Just when you thought nothing good could ever come out of Gollywood- the Ghanaian film industry- as hijacked by amateur posers and trend hoppers, along comes Keteke (Train), the debut feature length by Peter Sedufia, chugging along with the intensity, awkwardness and clumsiness of the giant locomotive that borrows the film its title.

The timing is unspecified but judging from the lead actor’s male super afro wig and his love for funky highlife music generated from recorded cassette tapes played on an ancient record player, it is sometime in the seventies. Those good old days, when men were men, and women were dependent.

The opening sequence is quite preppy, instantly snatching attention with effective use of music, colors and pictures. This opening deftly coalesces into the film’s two principal characters, a young couple, Boi and Atwei, played charmingly by Adjetey Anang and Lydia Forson.

Atwei is heavily pregnant and the couple is making their way to her mother’s village, Akete. They hope to arrive just in time for the delivery but discover at the station that they have missed their train. Instead of standing around waiting for another one to arrive, they decide to make the long trek to the next train stop.

Clutching their heavy luggage and under the monstrous tropical heat, Atwei and Boi trade barbs and bicker at each other while Sedufia takes the opportunity to stage his own low rent, battle of the sexes.

Plot wise, Keteke is quite thin and on the surface, there is really nothing much in terms of action that is going on. But that doesn’t mean that Sedufia’s film is less than arresting; visually or cinematically. The chemistry between Anang and Forson is the oil that keeps the locomotive zooming along credibly.

The screenplay is engaging with moments where it is laugh out loud funny and there is even an added subversive element of magical realism infused as the couple make a detour into the lair of an elderly wizard who eats babies for breakfast. It may make little sense on first watch but when the entire movie is imagined as a parable of Africa, then it is easier to understand why this segment exists.

Keteke is open to various interpretations depending on how far one is willing to reach or stretch the limits of imagination. It works quite well on a primary level as a quirky comedy of manners and the performance of the central leads, especially by Lydia Forson helps gives the film plenty of its bite. But because cinema has to be seen to be representing something politically, Keteke can be read as the narration of Africa’s chronic post-colonial underdeveloped state.

The missed train could be stand-ins for how the continent has missed the mark at every turn, from the industrial age to the present domination of data and industrial technology. The constant bickering between Atwei and Boi could represent elements like tribalism and religion that stand in the way of true greatness.

Anang’s Boi may not be the 21st century, woke gentleman, but for all his weaknesses, he is willing to take the lead when push comes to shove to protect his family from harm. While this may be a redeeming quality, gender scholars will study the film’s masculine posturing as a demonstration of the continent’s obsession with sustaining patriarchal societies. Boi is always in the lead with Atwei following a few steps behind. But she is no shrinking Violet and is quite willing to give as good as she gets.

Filled with beautiful, stark nature shots, and layers of meaning Keteke is a fine outing for everyone involved and proof that Gollywood is a yet durable system.

360NoBS Film Review: Idahosa Trails

$

In Nigeria, Pentecostalism is a big as it has ever been. The preachers who are at the forefront of the mission have become so huge, casting such massive influence on the culture. It is a surprise they do not all have biopics fixing their stories in perspective. There is the Charles Novia helmed, The Covenant Church released circa 2006, that attempted to trace the origins of the biggest Daddy G.O. of them all, Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. But despite initial excitement, the project did not quite catch on beyond certain circles.

Director and cinematographer, Stanlee Ohikhuare (Behind the Wheels) stages an intervention with Idahosa Trails, a not quite conventional biopic about the life and legacy of Pa Benson Idahosa, the charismatic preacher and founder of the Benin based, Church of God Mission International.

Idahosa may give the film its title, but the unconventional nature of the storytelling ensures that even in his own film, the man who is regarded as the father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria isn’t quite the star.

A young Idahosa is portrayed in some flash back scenes, receiving his calling and bringing back a child from the dead. But the bulk of the adult Idahosa’s – he was fondly called Papa- appearance in Idahosa Trails is an extended dream sequence where the late preacher, played by Charles Okafor is under a tree praying and eliciting pure reverence from his increasing congregation. Other appearances come in snatches.

Idahosa Trails is still about Papa, but as seen through the eyes of Thomas Book (David Schifter,) a troubled freelance journalist who arrives Benin City on an assignment, but finds himself increasingly drawn to the man of God, following the curious case of a fellow who came out of an eight year coma and gave credit fo his healing to Idahosa.

It is the oldest trick in Hollywood, telling black stories through the gaze of non-threatening Caucasian protagonists and it is surprising why Ohikhuare would choose to go with this narrative for his infinitely Nigerian film.

In any case, Thomas Books’ career isn’t going so hot and while the film teases out a personal tragedy to explain his moodiness, it should also be said that he isn’t a particularly adept journalist. Since learning about the miracle, Books has been consumed with meeting the man of God. A single Google search or inquiry from a next door neighbor and he would have found out that Idahosa has been dead for almost twenty years now. Instead Books goes through the incredibly long process of meeting up with a young pastor and Idahosa mentee, Osas (Kunle Idowu, unnecessarily overwrought) who acts as both stringer and tour guide.

The bulk of the film is composed of the two men, bonding, arguing and learning to trust the other. This is intercut with flash back scenes tracing the origins of Idahosa’s call to service. Then to interviews of real life persons affected by Idahosa’s ministry. Idahosa’s wife, heiress and expander of the ministry, Archbishop Margaret shows up at some point.

Idahosa Trails is a big bore. Nothing much happens and the pacing moves at a snail’s pace. The premise is fair enough but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Liz Benson and Patrick Doyle are cast as parents of baby Idahosa but their roles seem to have slashed beyond recognition, leaving a single early scene that does nothing for the film.

Osas Ajibade is introduced at some point, perhaps to spice up proceedings while serving as the love interest to Mr Books who has the personality of wet bread. But this gambit backfires immediately. She is given nothing to do, doesn’t even bother to phone in a performance and genuinely doesn’t appear interested in the material. Can’t blame her though.

Kunle Idowu is the only person mustering any excitement, but he goes about it all wrong, playing a hit-and-miss slight variation on his star making Frank Donga character.

The primary disappointment with Idahosa Trails may be that it ultimately fails to inspire any sort of emotion whatsoever, beyond basic blandness. Not awe, not reverence, not even fondness. Anyone who is aware of the fiery brand of Pentecostalism that Archbishop Idahosa pioneered must recognize and be disappointed in the conclusion that this film doesn’t even begin to do him justice.
